FIREFIGHTER INTERVIEW GUIDE
Situational Awareness
Picking up on developing hazards early, working within the limits of your training, equipment and own fitness, and keeping records someone else can rely on.
This is the PQA candidates prepare for least and one of the easiest to evidence, because almost everyone has a real example — they just don't recognise it as one.
What a panel is listening for
- You noticed a developing hazard before you were prompted
- You worked within known limits rather than pushing past them
- You tracked several things happening at once
- You kept accurate records that someone else could act on
Questions you might be asked
- Tell us about a time you noticed a hazard that others had walked past.
- Describe a time you sensed something was wrong before it became obvious.
- Tell us about a time you had to keep track of several things happening at once.
How people lose marks
No example prepared at all. Because it's rarely on candidates' lists, this is the question most likely to produce an improvised answer. It shows.
Awareness with no action. Noticing something is half of it. What did you do — who did you tell, what did you stop, what did you change?
Only dramatic examples. A near-miss on a building site is fine, but so is spotting that a colleague was working beyond their limit, or that a record was wrong before someone relied on it. Everyday examples with clear action score well.

Say what you noticed, what made you notice it, what you did about it, and what would have happened if you hadn't. That last clause is the outcome, and it's usually missing.
