FIREFIGHTER INTERVIEW GUIDE
Commitment to Development
Reflecting honestly on your own performance, actively building knowledge and skill, and helping other people do the same.
Firefighter training never stops. Services want people who seek out what they need to know rather than waiting to be sent on a course.
What a panel is listening for
- You reflected on your own performance rather than waiting to be told
- You sought out knowledge rather than absorbing only what was put in front of you
- You acted on feedback and changed how you worked
- You shared what you learnt so others benefited
Questions you might be asked
- Tell us about a time you identified a weakness in yourself and did something about it.
- Describe a time you acted on feedback and changed the way you worked.
- Tell us about a skill you have learnt from scratch.
- Give us an example of something you have learnt recently that nobody asked you to learn.
How people lose marks
The learning was arranged for you. A course your employer sent you on evidences attendance. Something you pursued unprompted evidences commitment. Both can appear in an answer, but the second one is what's being marked.
Reflection that's a general principle. "Learning is most valuable when you apply it" is a statement about the world. "I now write down one thing I got wrong after every shift" is a statement about you. Only the second scores.
Nothing on developing others. Half this PQA is about other people. Answers that are entirely self-focused leave marks on the table.
No named change. If you can't finish the sentence "since then, I have started to…", the answer isn't ready.

Write your answer the way you'd say it. Get it assessed against the behaviours a real panel uses, and see exactly what would lift it a band.

End on the change, not the learning. What you now do differently is the part that separates a good answer from a strong one, and it's the part most people leave out.
